To make the training effective, feed your puppy the recommended amount of food and then bring him out to your yard. You will need to be patient because the pup might spend some time sniffing around and exploring before actually defecating and urinating. Do not immediately remove it from the yard after he has done his business. Let him become familiar with the place where he has peed and pooped so it will make an impression on him. You might have to do this for several weeks until he is old enough to go out of the house on his own and do his business after eating.

One tip that experts try to impress on dog owners is to take away any unfinished food that the dog may have left. Most, if not all puppies, tend to gobble their food down, so any uneaten portion is already too much for him. Some puppies eat until they throw up, which can be dangerous. Try to stick to the recommended portions of food when feeding. Dogs will eventually get over the gobbling and throwing up phase, so check to see just how much food he can actually finish and only increase this when necessary. Taking away the extra food will prevent the dog from eating again and defecating.

Another way of teaching a dog to do his business outside instead of in the house is to take it out for a walk during the crucial times. Older dogs usually urinate and defecate at specific times of the day and you can train yours by going out for a walk when you wake and before going to sleep. Just like very young puppies, older puppies that are already a bit house trained can be trained to do their business while out on a walk. This is especially important for pooping since dogs pee several times in a day, depending on their access to water.

In connection to water access, it is true that it is practical for the home owner to limit the dog’s access to water to prevent “accidents” in the house but this is a cruel thing to do. There are a lot of reasons why dogs should have unlimited access to their water bowls, including dehydration and overheating. 

As for walking your dog, experts recommend keeping your best buddy on a leash to prevent and avoid mishaps. These days, a lot of states are more strict when it comes to animal control and how you regulate your pets. Even if your puppy is well-behaved and trained, it is still a good idea to keep him on a leash outside of your property. Some dogs, no matter how well-trained may run after a cat or squirrel or be spooked by vehicles and other uncommon things he might encounter on the road.
