Points to Ponder When Looking For Great Rottweiler Breeders
Rottweilers are an old breed of dog that have survived decades with the standard of the breed basically intact. This should say a lot about the fanciers and breeders that take pride in maintaining the standard for the breed. In spite of the efforts of upright and faithful breeders, there are many others that have other intentions in mind when it comes to producing Rotties. The popularity of the breed has spawned a lot of puppy mills and so-called Rottweiler breeders that care more for financial gain than the dogs.
Most good breeders will be able to provide you, the buyer, with a pedigree of both of the parents of the puppy that you want to acquire along with a medical record showing what vaccinations were administered to the puppy. A pedigree will show the lineage of both the dam (female) and the sire (male), parents of the puppy. Despite being born to pedigreed dogs registered with a kennel club, some puppies are not registered yet until they are older than the age that they are weaned and sold. This could mean that the buyer might be the one to register the puppy. Some kennel clubs have set a limit with regards to registration. You will have to consult with the breeder regarding this. Other breeders who are more careful, will report the litter with the kennel club to ensure that the lineage will be intact. A copy of the report may be given to those who will purchase puppies from the litter. Some of the great Rottweiler breeders go to the extent of having their pups screened and checked for diseases that are prevalent in the breed. Dogs with genetic defects or carry defective genes are usually not sold to prevent from undermining the breed standard. If they dogs are sold, the breeders might ask for this particular puppy to be neutered or spayed.
To help you, the following are some points and tips to bear in mind when looking for Rottie breeders.
A Good Reputation
Great breeders usually have a name for themselves in relation to the dog breed that they concentrate on. In this case, while it is so easy to buy an internet domain name and post several charming pictures of Rottie pups, breeders that are known for the quality of their pups and the quality of the care they shower on their dogs should be well known for these points among dog fanciers in general and other professionals connected to canine clubs and kennels. Getting in touch with a trusted veterinarian or some people from shelters or kennels should point you to the right direction. The internet is a convenient way to get around without leaving the comfort of your home but there is no guarantee that what you see in the world wide web is accurate or even real. If you have concerns regarding the kennel that you are viewing it is a good idea to visit and get to know the breeder and his dogs before committing to buy.
If you want a Rottweiler with a pedigree, getting in touch with the right people is important. Great breeders of pedigreed Rotties can be very particular regarding who they sell to and which puppy they sell. You must understand why they are very particular; they do not want their dogs to fall into the hands of disreputable breeders and they want their dogs to live happy, fulfilling lives in or out of the show ring. These kinds of breeders might be hesitant to sell to people that they do not personally know. It may be best to let them know of your intention of acquiring a Rottie first and then let them get to know you more. A mutual friend might be a good way to establish a friendship with your breeder of choice. A good rapport and relationship with the breeder is important not just for the express purpose of buying a Rottweiler puppy but also for guidance and care for that puppy afterwards. Breeders who care for their dogs like to keep in touch with the families that they sell to as well as like to keep tabs with the progress and growth of the puppy. Some are only too willing to help when a problem arises.
Know the Parents
The temperament of both sire and dam are crucial contributors to the temperament of their puppies. The same goes for the temperament of the breeders who are the initial caretakers of the puppies. Visit prospective Rottweiler breeders and get to know at least one parent of the litter since it is usually the dam that stays with the puppies. The temperament of the dam should give you an inkling of what the puppies might turn out to be when they grow up. While Rotties have a reputation of being aggressive, do not discount overly aggressive dams when they are with their puppies or have just recently given birth. Rottweilers are reputed to be overly protective with their human families, more so when they have their own litter to protect. Although most Rottweilers, are calm and very stable, even with puppies, do not expect all out affection from these dogs. They are wary of strangers and it may take some time for adult dogs to warm up to you.
Also take note of the relationship between the breeder and the dogs. Beware of breeders that have dogs which may be afraid of them or any other person, for that matter. This is a sign that the breeder may be mistreating the dogs. The same with a breed standard, there is also what one might call a standard asking price for a puppy with excellent parentage and pedigree. When you visit different breeders, you might notice that their prices stay within a certain range. Be careful with breeders who are selling pups at bargain prices.
One thing that some experts are concerned about regarding the parentage of puppies is if both the sire and the dam are from the same kennel. With regards to quality of the litter, having the same breeding pair is not healthy. This could mean that the lineage is saturated with the same genes and that there is not enough variety in the kennel for it to produce healthy pups.
American vs German Rottweiler Breeders
Many fans of the Rottweiler have preferences as to whether the dog they like is a German Rottweiler or an American Rottweiler. Experts in the breed can point out the very slight differences that exist between the two. The Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (ADRK) is the kennel club for Rotties in Germany while the AKC is the kennel club that carries much clout with regards to breed standards for all registered dog breeds in the US. The ADRK upholds the breed standard that has been in place for decades and have made only little or slight changes to it over the years. The AKC borrows heavily from the ADRK with regards to the Rottweiler but has also made some amendments to the standard to accommodate changes for the better.
With these things in mind, let us explore the differences. In reality, the largest difference between the two is where the puppy is born. If it is born in Germany, then it should adhere to the ADRK standards and the other way around. Breeders with dogs that fall below standard or exceed the standard may not be allowed to register their dogs with the corresponding kennel club or may not be allowed to present their anomalous dog in shows. German born dogs brought over to the US ( and the other way around) may be registered with the AKC and the ADRK.
Another very slight difference is the acceptable height and weight of the Rottweiler dogs. Expect to find a German Rottweiler breeder with slightly larger dogs than the so called American ones because the breed standard of the ADRK is slightly heavier and taller (just by centimeters!) than the AKC. American Rottweiler breeders also allow docking of the tail whereas, in Germany it is not acceptable for the ADRK. Expect to see most, if not all, pedigreed and registered Rottweilers in Germany with their long tails intact and more docked tails in the AKC registry. German Rottweiler breeders, even those in the US, will not dock their puppies tails while breeders that adhere to the AKC standard have the option of docking.
All in all, it is a good idea to research the breed standard before committing to buy a Rottweiler puppy. These standards should give you a good idea of what to expect from the dog and whether he is a good fit to your lifestyle and home. Visit several good breeders to get to know them better and to see who has the same or at least have a similar mindset as you. This is important since you will be routinely in contact with the Rottweiler breeder for the reservation of the puppy as well as for keeping in touch with his progress and growth.
