Dog Toys For Aggressive Chewers

Tough Toys for Your Tough Chewer

When you have a large breed dog, chances are you have experienced having a chew toy destroyed within hours of giving it to your four legged buddy. And I’m not talking about teething puppies, I am talking about full grown dogs that have a strong desire to gnaw on something solid. While not all large breed dogs chew aggressively, a lot of them have large enough jaws and teeth to wear out an ordinary dog toy. So I tried looking for sturdy toys that will satisfy their love for chewing as well as keep them occupied for an extended period of time without breaking apart and causing some sort of injury. I found several toys that can actually withstand the loving that my dogs give it. Read on to save yourself and your dog the frustration of a toy that comes apart easily as well as save yourself some dough.

The Kong Brand

I remember this brand as probably one of the first ones to market dog toys for aggressive chewers. They certainly hit the spot when it comes to toys that withstand the test of teeth, jaws and time. I have a few Kong chew toys for my large dogs at home and I try to switch them out regularly to make things more interesting for my doggie buddies.

One particular Kong toy that has really impressed me is the Original Kong Extreme Dog Toy in black.

This particular toy is made from a carbon black ultra flex rubber which I believe Kong has exclusive rights to (correct me if I am wrong!) The rubber that all Kong dog toys are made from is non toxic. These large, virtually indestructible rubber toys are puncture resistant and come in models that can be stuffed with treats to interest your dog some more. The Original Kong comes in different sizes for different jaw sizes. I am proud to say that the one I got my dogs has lasted more than a couple of years already and has, ultimately, given my dogs a lot of chewing pleasure and play time.

Another Kong toy worth mentioning is the Kong Goodie Bone Extreme.

With the label “Extreme”, you will know that it is also in black and made from the same virtually indestructible rubber as Original Kong Extreme Dog Toy. It is shaped like a bone and has “grippers” at each end to hold a treat or more in such a way that your aggressive chewer has to exert a little extra effort to get them. This is perfect for large and extra large dog breeds.

The Kong Ballistic Ring Dog Toy is great change of texture from the other two Kong toys that I have mentioned above.

This ring shaped toy is made from a combination of Denier Poly, Denier Ballistic Nylon and extra tough but soft fleece. The two inner layers are made with the Denier Ploy, covered with another layer of the Ballistic Nylon and last, the tough fleece. The layers are held together by several rows of stitching and there are squeakers securely stitched inside to create an interesting sound when your dog bites on it. Overall, this toy can handle some abuse from dogs and may last longer than most dog toys for aggressive chewers. One thing that I really like about the Kong Ballistic Ring is that it is gentler on my dogs’ teeth and gums compared to other toys.

If you have a dog that enjoys a game of catch with a Frisbee, you might consider getting a Kong Extreme Flyer Dog Toy.

This one functions as a Frisbee but at the same time can be chewed vigorously when your dog feels like it. Made from the same durable carbon black ultra flex rubber that will satisfy your avid gnawer, this toy is flexible and can be rolled or folded for easy storage. Flight is more accurate than I expected so I wasn’t so worried about me throwing it and sending my dog to a crowd or in the wrong direction.

West Paw Designs

The dog toys from this manufacturer is almost as indestructible as those from Kong. I love that most, if not all of the dog toys for aggressive chewers, come in a variety of bright colors. The colors make searching for the toys in the undergrowth and bushes a whole lot easier. The toys are made with Zogoflex which is certified safe and FDA compliant. What really made me like the products is that the fact that West Paw Design is a company that cares for the environment. All the dog toys that they manufacture can be recycled by the company and the try to minimize their impact on the environment.

A dog toy that I have tried from West Paw Designs made with Zogoflex is their large Tux toy. It is a bendable toy that has a hollow center for treats. It bounces when you toss it on a hard enough surface and floats well in water. I love that it is safe enough to put inside the dishwasher, which means it is non toxic. It is durable enough to last longer than most chew toys.

Other notable toys that have caught my attention from West Paw Designs include, the Bumi, the Hurley and the Jive. All are made with the patented Zogoflex material and are guaranteed to last a long time.

Nylabone

Nylabone is synonymous to great dental health for dogs. Their products are aimed at promoting strong teeth and gums as well as entertainment for dog all over the world. They have several products in particular that are designed to appease the destructive chewing urges of large and extra large dogs.

Nylabone Big Chews is a great chew toy that not only helps with your dog’s dental health but was also built to withstand the jaw strength of dogs over 50 pounds or more. The product is made from really strong nylon and has “bristles” that are raised when your dog gnaws or chews on it. These bristles help to reduce the buildup of tartar and plaque. I love that not only will the dogs be occupied for an extended period of time but they will also be cleaning their teeth.

The Nylabone Dura-Chew Double Action Combo BOne Souper is a great toy for dental health and aggressive chewers. It has nubs all over both ends of the bone shaped toy that help to manage tartar and plaque on your dog’s teeth. It features a center that is made from a softer kind of rubber that dogs can grip with their mouth. The center is mint flavored to give your four legged friend, minty fresh breath.

Goughnuts

Goughnuts is dog toy manufacturing brand that has designed their product for strong chewers. One product that I believe is suitable for avid gnawers is the Goughnuts Maxx Black. It has a lifetime guarantee and the company will replace your dog’s toy if the outer black layer is chewed through by your dog to reveal the red layer under it. The manufacturers recommend surrendering the toy if any red is showing and not to let your dog continue to use it. This ring shaped chew toy floats and can even be given to teething puppies.

Antlers

These natural dog chews are harvested from the ground after the deer has shed them naturally. You will be glad to know that these kinds of chews do not splinter or crack and they contain potassium, zinc, calcium and manganese for your dogs dental health. While there are a lot of naturally shed antlers sold just cut up and sized depending on your preference, there are also some antlers which are cut to smaller sizes and string on a rope.

Balls

Dogs enjoy chasing after balls that roll and bounce. Some balls can actually be tougher than average and should also be mentioned as worth a try for aggressive chewers.

Planet Dog makes COSMOS, a group of tough balls that are named after heavenly bodies. They vary in sizes but the one they call Sol is about 5 inches in diameter and has a minty taste. It is buoyant and bounces really well to provide your dog with lots of fun and activity.

Jolly Pets Romp and Roll ball is a ball on a rope that was initially used to entertain horses. It is made from non toxic plastic and can float even when it has been punctured. It is large enough for large and extra large dog breeds. Both the plastic ball and the rope is tough enough to provide several hours of entertainment for your dog.

Soft Toys

Although we are talking about dog toys for aggressive chewers, you would be amazed at some soft toys that can be tough enough to last a long while.

Outward Hounds Invincibles are a group of soft toys that are really worth the investment. Not as hard as rubber and gentle on your dog’s mouth, teeth and gums, they last longer even when chewed on by avid chewers. They come with squeakers to provide something interesting when your dog bites the right spot. The inner lining prevents rips and all toys have reinforced double layered seams.

goDog Dragons are floppy soft toys that have less stuffing than your ordinary stuffed toys. This means less of a mess when your dog manages to get through the Chew Guard Technology lining and the bubble plush.

Ethical Products have produced a range of toys in the form or animals made from canvas. They are not as tough as those mentioned above but they should last longer than your ordinary stuffed toy.

I hope that the list of chew toys I mentioned will help you choose the right one for your dog. A lot of those mentioned are really good investments and will last longer than you think.
